The Power of Perspective: Embracing a Security Mindset for Innovative Solutions

A wise man once said “Don’t trust your eyes, they can deceive you”  Obi-Wan was saying that our perspective can sometimes be flawed and I’ve come to understand the importance of adopting a broader perspective in cybersecurity. Too often, we fixate on singular tools or skillsets, failing to recognize the intricate web of interconnected technologies and disciplines that shape our digital landscape.

If the Star Wars Quote wasn’t a giveaway I am lifelong geek, and I have always had a passion for technology. In my career I have thrived in exploring the nuances of cybersecurity, from assembling components on a motherboard, deciphering packet captures, to drafting SOP documentation. Each endeavor has been a step towards honing my Security Mindset—a mindset that embraces the interconnectivity of technology and seeks innovative solutions to safeguard assets.

Remember that every challenge is an opportunity to expand our horizons and refine our craft. I would be remise if I did not end this with another Star Wars quote: As Yoda wisely reminds us, “Do or do not, there is no try” So, Don’t hesitate to reach out to me so we can build our Security Mindsets together

Education

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Security and Assurance from Western Governors University, and I’m on the cusp of earning my Master of Science in the same field. These degrees represent years of diving deep into the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity—learning not just the “how” but the “why” behind securing our digital universe.

For me, education isn’t about collecting credentials; it’s about chasing curiosity. As a lifelong geek (yes, I did read encyclopedias for fun as a kid), I’ve always been driven by a need to understand the intricate “why” behind systems, whether it’s a network protocol, a firewall rule, or the logic of a well-crafted security policy. This “why mentality” fuels my approach to both learning and teaching. I share this mindset with my students and clients, encouraging them to ask questions, peel back the layers, and empower themselves through inquisitiveness.

Because in cybersecurity, as in life, understanding the “why” is the key to unlocking innovative solutions and staying one step ahead of the threats. Let’s embrace the journey of discovery together—after all, as a certain wise Jedi might say, “The greatest teacher, failure is.”

Cybersecurity

From 2017 to the present day, cybersecurity has been the mainstay of my career, specializing in incident response within a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Collaborating with cross-functional teams spanning Incident Management, Digital Forensics, Threat Intelligence, and IT Operations. This multifaceted role has empowered me to develop and document robust process guidelines and SOPs, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and regulatory standards. I’ve spearheaded discreet incident response procedures, fostering a culture of efficiency and accountability. Through meticulous attention to detail and effective communication, I’ve played a pivotal role in fortifying cyber defenses and safeguarding critical assets against emerging threats.

Teaching

During 2019-2020, I served as a Teaching Assistant for a Cyber Bootcamp at Georgia Tech, where I facilitated various units covering essential cybersecurity topics. From introductory modules like Cybersecurity Fundamentals to more advanced subjects such as Network Security and Penetration Testing, I provided hands-on support to students, helping them navigate through concepts, assignments, and practical exercises. This role involved direct interaction with students, addressing inquiries, assisting with assignments, and grading assessments. Amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, I played a pivotal role in transitioning the curriculum to an online format, ensuring continuity in learning and engagement. Leveraging this experience, in 2023- Present, I collaborated with Atlanta Metropolitan State College, Year Up and Opportunity Runway, nonprofit organizations, to design and deliver an accelerated cybersecurity boot camp, empowering participants with essential skills and knowledge in a dynamic learning environment.

Engagement & Facilitation

Utilizing my background in stand-up comedy and improv comedy, I excel in delivering engaging presentations and facilitating events with confidence and flair. From hosting successful fundraising game shows to leading improv comedy workshops focused on collaboration, I leverage my unique experiences to create memorable and impactful speaking engagements. Whether presenting to stakeholders in a corporate setting or orchestrating dynamic events, my public speaking skills ensure each endeavor is met with success and leaves a lasting impression.

EDR Rule Enhancement Project

While collaborating on an enterprise-wide initiative, our threat intelligence team flagged a surge in sophisticated threat actors exploiting gaps in our defenses. Recognizing the need to fortify our endpoint detection and response (EDR) capabilities, I took part in an initiative to strengthen detection rules to counter these evolving threats head-on.
I dove into research, leveraging tools like Mandiant Advantage to dissect the behavior and attack vectors of these adversaries, mapping their tactics to the MITRE ATT&CK Framework. By evaluating our existing controls, I pinpointed critical detection gaps and crafted tailored rule enhancements using SigmaQ to ensure precision and scalability. To validate these rules, I facilitated hands-on collaboration sessions with Security Operations teams, stress-testing them against real-world scenarios and aligning updates with the organization’s strategic security goals.
The result? We successfully deployed several new EDR detection rules, closing visibility gaps and significantly boosting our ability to detect and neutralize advanced persistent threats. This project not only hardened our operational security posture but also showcased the power of blending threat intelligence with defensive operations.

SANS 504 GCIH and NetWars Experience

In pursuit of sharpening my incident handling skills, I attended SANS 504 GCIH training in Washington, DC, immersing myself in the art of defending against cyber threats. The highlight? Leading a ragtag team through the NetWars competition and Capture the Flag (CTF) challenge, where collaboration and grit were our greatest assets.
Our team, a mix of seasoned pros and eager newcomers, leaned into shared learning and open communication. I fostered an environment where every member’s perspective mattered, channeling our collective enthusiasm to tackle complex challenges. Though we didn’t claim first place, our synergy propelled us to an impressive 5th in NetWars and earned us the coveted CTF coin—a testament to our teamwork. It’s the strength of collaboration that turns a group into a force to be reckoned with.
This experience reinforced my belief that cybersecurity thrives on diverse perspectives and relentless curiosity. By embracing the chaos of competition, we honed our skills and built bonds and memories we’ll hold onto.

Cybersecurity Mentorship Program

Driven by a passion for nurturing the next generation of cyber defenders, I launched a Mentorship Program for interns and students, designed to equip them with the tools to thrive in cybersecurity. Beyond technical skills, I crafted a curriculum focusing on the “why” of career success—resume refinement, interview mastery, and strategic career planning—empowering mentees to navigate their paths with confidence.
To break down barriers, I built an online community platform for continuous learning and support, ensuring accessibility for all. Partnering with nonprofits like Year Up and Opportunity Runway, I expanded the program’s reach, delivering cybersecurity boot camps alongside mentorship sessions. These initiatives created a dynamic learning ecosystem, sparking curiosity and resilience in aspiring professionals.
This program reflects my belief that mentorship is about more than knowledge transfer; it’s about igniting a security mindset that lasts a lifetime.

Ludus Cyber Lab Project

Tired of the limitations of VirtualBox, I set out to build something bigger, a bare-metal Ludus server using old gaming PC hardware and Proxmox to create my own Danger Room for cybersecurity practice. What started as a personal challenge sparked an epiphany: why not craft a hands-on cyber lab for students, accessible even on restrictive networks like college campuses?
Inspired by a mentor’s nudge to explore Ludus, I ventured into the complex world of WireGuard and Cloudflare Tunnel. The journey wasn’t smooth, typos, routing conflicts, and configuration hiccups tested my resolve. But each stumble sharpened my security mindset. I configured WireGuard for secure VPN connectivity and used Cloudflare Tunnel to expose the Proxmox UI via a public URL, bypassing network restrictions without touching local routers.
The result is a robust, real-world cyber lab where students can securely manage VMs and hone their skills, no matter their location. This project embodies the power of perspective, seeing challenges as opportunities to innovate.

A little bit more about me

Originally hailing from Chicago, Illinois, my journey has been fueled by an insatiable curiosity and a natural inclination towards technology. From my early days tinkering with VCR players to installing BonziBuddy on our home computer, to the dismay of my parents, I’ve always found solace and excitement in the world of technology.
After high school, I ventured into the realm of retail jobs, where I gained invaluable hands-on experience and learned the importance of humility and a strong work ethic. However, I felt no sense of purpose in my work until a serendipitous encounter with a flyer for the Year Up program changed everything.

Embracing this opportunity, I embarked on a path that would shape my future. As the president of my class, I led with passion and determination, eventually earning an internship with New York Life’s Incident Response team. Infusing every task with unwavering enthusiasm and a fresh perspective, I quickly found myself in a role that I continue to thrive in today.

I firmly believe that our trajectories are within our own hands, and I am committed to the principles of giving back and lifting others as I climb.
